BACKGROUND BBC Worldwide have a number of successful channels around the globe and our portfolio is on the increase. We recently launched BBC Brit, BBC Earth and BBC First - all with the aim to introduce a wider audience to the best of British television content. Each channel identity was created to represent the type of programming it contains and appeal to a certain demographic. For example, BBC Brit offers a variety of factual entertainment programmes skewed towards a male audience. Its content is diverse and ranges from chat shows and comedy to cars and adventure. It blends facts, fun, witty and smart. It’s positioned as ‘where meaningful and meaningless collide’ and its identity reflects its quirky eccentricity and irreverence. Some examples of BBC Worldwide’s channel indents can be found here: BBC Brit / BBC First / BBC Earth / The Ident Gallery / THE BRIEF We want you to create a brand new channel targeted towards the 16-24 year old demographic. Give it a unique name and a distinctive identity. The name doesn’t have to include ‘BBC’ but it should be catchy and relevant to this age group. They have grown up connected to the internet and its limitless opportunities, learning to filter through the noise and carefully pinpointing exactly what is worth their time. To get their attention, and keep it, your channel will need to stand out from the crowd. It must be aspirational, fun and engaging - a channel they want to talk about and share, be associated with and feel like it adds value to their life. You need to think about how to reach them and gain maximum exposure. The exact content of the channel isn’t essential to include but if you wish to include content - the programmes should be from existing programmes rather than fictional ones. DELIVERABLES You will need to submit the following: Research : 1 page that shows how well you understand your market, the competition and positioning of your brand. Identity: 1-2 pages of your concept, logo design and colour palette. Promotional campaign: 1-2 pages that show us how you would promote your channel to your target audience. This doesn’t have to be finished artwork, it could be sketches, but please show how it would be marketed in print, online and on social media platforms. Source materials: please see ‘CONSIDERATIONS’ section below. Final piece: please select one of the two options below: OPTION ONE - ONSCREEN IDENT A channel ident is a short film sequence played before each programme starts. It’s a reminder of the channel you are watching and a great opportunity to reinforce the brand. Your ident should be no longer that one minute and be an eye-catching sequence that sets the style and tone for the channel. This ident will be played across 75+ screens within BBC Worldwide’s HQ in London. The technical requirements can be found in the CONSIDERATIONS section below. Please note that there is no audio on these screens so your film should not include music or voice over. All video submissions will be watched with the audio switched off. OPTION TWO - APPLIED GRAPHICS We would like you to design a billboard ad to promote your channel. Think about how this needs to stand out visually in the street. It should give enough information to let people know what this is but also lead them to want more. Your billboard design will become a wall display in BBC Worldwide’s HQ and we will require high resolution files for print. CONSIDRATIONS Onscreen Ident We encourage you to create your own content, however you can access BBC copyright material via BBC Motion Gallery website: gettyimages.co.uk/bbcmotiongallery.
