Young Creators, Tokyo Designers week
ARTS THREAD’s reporter Yoshie Kawahara went along to see the Young Creator exhibition at this year’s Tokyo Designers Week. Our first post includes Miraitohshizu’s handcrafted lamps made from cotton waste from the futon industry, as well as Newcastle-based Tatsuya Akita with his Concrete Desk Set. In Part 2 read about more of the designers’ work such as new baby toys from NIRCO and Natsuhiro Yamauchi’s furniture built up from triangles.
A Tribute to the Art of TASS posters
Exhibition of the week is A Tribute to the Art of TASS posters at the Baker Mamonova Gallery near Hastings, on the English South coast. Soviet propaganda posters from the 40s and 50s from the TASS studio are easily identifiable by their stencil format and bold colourful graphics and designs. These posters have inspired three British artists, Russell Baker, Ed Williams and Mark Godwin, to create their own tribute to the TASS poster using powder paint and hand-cut stencils that give the works the element of chance and variety.
