ARTS THREAD went to Cologne last week for PASSAGEN, Interior Design Week and took a look at the University Forum group at Design Parcours Ehrenfeld (DPE), where product and interiors students and graduates from 15 German universities showcased their projects. Starting today, Interior Design Show in Toronto promises some exciting products. Look out for Studio North, exclusive to IDS, featuring 60 Canadian and international designers exhibiting one-off and custom collections of furniture, lighting, glass, ceramics, textiles, and surface design in a gallery-like installation, as well as the Prototype exhibition featured works not currently in production created by independent designers. Exhibition of the week is MoMA New York’s Tokyo 1955–1970: A New Avant-Garde. From the mid-1950s through the 1960s, Tokyo transformed itself from the capital of a war-torn nation into an international center for arts, culture, and commerce, becoming home to some of the most important art being made at the time. The exhibition features over 200 works of various media—painting, sculpture, photography, architecture, drawings, and graphic design, as well as video and documentary film.

Coming up February 27 – March 03 2013, Design Indabapromises to be a strong show this year. For the conference, confirmed speakers include Sir John Hegarty, John Maeda, Paula Scher & Seymour Chwast, Matthew Carter, Daan Roosegaarde and Oscar Diaz.We are also looking forward to Li Edelkoort’s Totemism: Memphis Meets Africa exhibition inside the Expo, where products by South African designers will be curated by Li, based on the trend of stacking and layering colours, patterns and materials to achieve a totemic quality reminiscent of 80s Memphis Style.
