In the past the balance in designing for disability has swayed to one of solving problems, with the priority tradionally being to enable with as little attention as possible. What is interesting to me, is the opposite flow where disability directly affects design to catalyse new thinking.
Living without sight, to communicate with just your hands, to read only by touch, may sound incredible, but these feats are an everyday occurence for people that are see as 'disabled.' With advances in design and technology, we are also now seeing people (in particular with physical disabilities) become just as able, and in some cases more capable - I have defined this as 'Super-able'
Super-able: A state one can become by living with a physical disability, with an assisitive aid or additional support, or by a process of recovery from a 'disabling' injury that results in enhanced, new, developed or special abilities. By using this formula I created my own design methodology of which I applied to objects; in turn making them 'Super-abled'.
