My work is about fragility, deterioration and absence. This has been largely influenced by the observations of both of my grandmothers’ over several years, one whose physical body is deteriorating and the other who has a rapidly deteriorating mind.

This fragility is reflected in my recent body of work which encourages the viewer to think of or be reminded of something that no longer exists through its visible absence.

I look at the surface of the object as a skin, a skin into which are embedded unexpected materials (cotton lace, gravel, grit, string) and which is altered through the firing process reminding us that there was a material under or just touching the surface which is no longer there, like memories which may have been lost or just forgotten.

The work is clean and crisp. The unpredictability of the making process means that the work can change with every cast; potential disasters can metamorphose into beautiful and seemingly fragile objects.

Most of us experience things that can profoundly affect the rest of our lives. This unpredictable change is something that is reflected and communicated in the pieces I make.
