Traditional techniques and processes within the textile genre both interest and inspire me, as does the concept of upcycling and the ethos of slow fashion. When these are combined, beautiful, long lasting pieces can be created that hold both an historical and contemporary edge.

My collection has been inspired by the Nottingham Trent University’s lace archive.

I used the draft plans, punch cards and fragments of handwriting in the archive as my starting point. The making process and sense of antique craft within the artefacts has been important in influencing my work, translating the history and skills involved in lace making in a contemporary manner.

A combination of hand embroidery, domestic and multihead machine stitch techniques portray a sense of the making process, with layers of shapes, handwriting and graphs found within the samples.

By using predominantly sheer fabrics these conceptual pieces can be layered together, to create feelings of faded history and time passed through the glimpses of various stitch textures and the tonal colour palette used.
