Artists Statement
I have always been drawn to detail, paid close attention to the exquisite beauty in minutiae, and been aware of the arresting presence and personal significance contained within objects.
Taking inspiration from the richness and symbolism of Dutch still life painting, Victoriana, and the archaeological supremacy of ceramics, my Photographic and Porcelain works are aimed at engaging the viewer within their own world of personal recollection and revelry.
Culture and history are predicated on collections. There is an abiding fascination with collections which draws us in towards an understanding ourselves, and acts as a point of connection between individuals. Foraging for significant ‘characters’ amongst the old and the new is always the start of my artistic practice.
The choosing of objects, the almost obsessive arrangement, and decision to display as photographic evidence or ceramic artifact, naturally reflect my own experiences and preferences, but are edited to move from the personal specific to a universal meaning.
Each item is framed within a compartment and holds a snapshot of one complete moment in time, combining with the others to depict memories and life experiences, in one elusive yet intimate portrait. The selected objects are carefully arranged, with meticulous consideration to orderly composition and colour palette.
The special quality of the photographs is the result of an innovative use of technology but does not involve any computer manipulation once the shot is taken. The ceramic process is equally serendipitous, as each fragile offering allows the high temperature firing to seal its moment of becoming.
There is an obvious synergy and crossing-over between both areas of practice, not only in concept but also evident in the found and orchestrated ceramic objects included in the photographs. Although each work exists in its own right, shown together, the heightened detail and colour of the two-dimensional medium, seemingly more alive than the tangible ceramic apparitions, gives a touch of irony and an element of temporal confusion.
Staging the ceramic pieces within the same framework as the photographs establishes their position as postmodern artifacts.
