As a mixed media illustrator I find excitement in using different approaches to convey an image as well as questioning notions of drawing.
I work mainly in creating imagery through print, stitch, paper manipulation, crochet, embroidery, as well as taking more unconventional approaches such as wire manipulation to represent drawn lines in space.
I am interested in the integration of craft and technology and the reaction of irony in which that evokes.
I am also intrigued by society’s perception of craft, as well as how the humble element of a craft made item can sit within the sleek realms of technology.
This fusion of ‘tactile graphics’ is what inspires my work. Hence my attempt to fuse the two together by cross-stitching frames in order to create a stop-frame animation.
I relate the contrast of crafts and technology with the similar contrast of feminine and masculine.
To me craft is feminine, technology is masculine they are each other’s opposite yet they can work together to create something unique and challenging. This contrast is quite impelling. This connects with the other aspect of my work; the interests in human expression, along with a growing love of theatrical stage settings and props.
The themes that are portrayed within these settings are altered identities; Mexican wrestlers camping themselves with elaborate masks and acting as superheroes, bearded and tattooed ladies of 1920’s showing their more masculine side and breaking previous perceptions of femininity; they both convey a similar message, the use of how we either project or mask our sense of self.
This sits within the idea of creating a tactile poster in the approach of a stage setting to portray something that would usually be seen as 2D. Juxtapositions and transitions are the glue that holds the connecting threads throughout the project.
