Helen Whitham recently graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, Dundee with a BDes (Hons) in Textile Design, specialising in knitted fabrics.

Helen’s passion for Shetland, the landscape, history and culture of knitting forms the basis of her design concepts and are a prominent source of inspiration in her work. Her knitwear is reminiscent of place, tradition and culture but with a fresh and contemporary twist. Detail, quality and craftsmanship are paramount in order to create knitwear that has a narrative and sparks emotions and connections.

During her third year at DJCAD Helen achieved a commendation for the British Wool Marketing Board Award in The Bradford Textiles Society Design Competition and was a finalist in the ‘Golf Project’, a competition run in partnership between the Textile Design department at DJCAD and Carnoustie Golf Links.

She is currently living and working at home in Shetland and has plans to set up her own business which she ultimately hopes will become part of and further Shetland’s longstanding culture of knitting.
