Inspired by the perfect aesthetic of Grecian vessels and the intrigue of ancient Egyptian Canopic jars (in which the Pharaoh’s organs are protected by the gods for the afterlife). The work brings together ancient and modern themes using a range of traditional and contemporary techniques, including laser-cut acrylic as a 21st century twist on slip-cast ceramics.
Techniques include coiling, slip casting, hand-painting glaze and designing ceramic transfers. This makes each piece extremely personal. Certain pieces also relate to popular culture, especially the modern love of fame and celebrity status.
Attracted firstly by the use of a figurative and classical form, the viewer will be captured by a rich tapestry of stories and images. The making of each vessel progresses from an interest, to an obsession, to an assemblage of information and imagery. The container concept is a metaphor for mental space and creating a guardian for thoughts or non-existent objects. Although they are vessels, the majority of the work is not made as functional ware.
The work is loud and the agonizing detail screams a love of the iconic characters and stories, but that which is created is non-threatening and often amusing.
