PORCELAIN POLITICS:

Art can not solve problems, but it can certainly bring them to our awareness....

The narratives of my work are concerned with Abuses of Power and Sexual Polictics - driven by significant personal experiences in childhood.

Stylistically, the 18th century decorative arts and 20th century Punk culture excite me and my work references both - thus surfaces are given to decorative excess, with curving lines and asymmetric design; contrastly the DIY aesthetics and irreverence of Punk take their place on the vessels, creating a fusion I call Pompadour Punk.

Layers of appropriated images and surface finishes build to create frenetic narratives full of pathos and confrontation. At times the vessels seem to have been attacked with tearing, glazing and scraffitto - an approach to action-art I call 'creative expressive vandalism'. 

I hand-build in porcelain, then deconstruct to create 'broken edges'. The flaws and breaks are lovingly treated with gilt and glass fusions - signifying the broken parts of 'self' following abuse, and the attempts to become 'whole' and beautiful again...
