After specialising in ceramics and mixed media 3D, I transitioned towards jewellery and my passion for body adornment by incorporating these platforms at the forefront of my themes and designs. My work focuses on the contrasts, conflicts and combinations of materials, often confronting and playing with ideas of conventional wearability and preconceptions of factors such as scale and weight. I wanted to work on a much larger, more sculptural scale, contradictory to traditional notions of wearable jewellery and heading toward couture ideas and aesthetics for the fashion and contemporary jewellery industry however, I’ve found myself comfortable working smaller and feel my pieces are technically more personal. Using clean lines and statement geometric shapes to contrast and make a harsh divergence against the stark organic frames and backgrounds. I tend to make few initial drawings and choose take a starting research point through taking photographs of inspirational patterns or shapes found within the environment around me. When working with materials I tend to get a feel for the way they handle and react to my tools before I then move forward into making designs and working into drawings and maquettes. I am intrigued with combining materials and contrasting textures and want to challenge what is universally perceived as precious and significant. The idea that jewellery should be comprised of precious materials is a tired one and becoming far more acceptable for those boundaries to be pushed. I intend to continue with these ideas and create wearable pieces that can be considered “precious” to the wearer. Read Less...
