‘Flatback Figure Groups’
This body of work looks to ceramic history’s rich past. Recalling the Staffordshire flatbacks from the Eighteenth Century – a popular object destined to sit on the mantelpiece shelf as a representation of idyllic rural life and a necessary antidote to reality.
My aim here is to reference the past but also employ and juxtapose recognizable contemporary surface imagery such as consumer packaging to create this visual language.
Twenty-First Century has bestowed us with many uncertainties for our future. I believe we can benefit from a symbolic remedial reminder of the fundamental values of life, relationships and simplicity once again.
