The reoccurring theme of boxes and containment was first realised by Rowan after her trip, to claustrophobic but overwhelmingly inspiring Tokyo, in July 2010.

This, paired with her own lack of storage and space, in her life back in London, her need to systemise the accumulation of packets of photographs, jewels left over from her nana’s shop, boxes of fabric and balls of wool, semi-consciously prompts Rowan to create patterns as ‘containers’ and a way to compulsively catalogue, tidy and organise the over spill of life’s imagery.

Her graduate piece, the ‘Self Contained’ square watermelon case stuffed the various screen-printed items; folding blankets, pillows and bags, represents a nomadic, completely self contained personal world packed with various motifs from her travel, childhood, imagination and life experiences.

All designs are united by the process of being made into boxes and then photographed in both their flat net and 3D form.
