Roxan Burley produces inventive design solutions which focus on user experience by playing on the senses to enhance spatial awareness. Her designs involve strong uses of materiality and interactive concepts.

The Topsham Estuary is the location for Roxan Burley’s adaptive office space for a photographer, which uses the camera as inspiration.

“Framing the View” uses extendable architectural lenses and interior sliding panels to generate a perspective to the user, giving flexibility in the function of the space by aiding motivation and concentration.

Skills

Design Skills:
As part of my course I have developed my ability of: problem solving, creativity, spatial awareness, research and design development skills.

Presentational Skills:
• 3D Modelling – using models to develop my ideas by experimenting and combining different materials

• Interior perspectives – through drawing and computer 3D modelling packages to produce realistic interior

• Atmospheric visualisation – using both imagery and film to give the feeling of being within the designed space

• Photomontage - placing my design in context by adding people and objects

I am currently in my third year of my undergraduate course. My course crosses all aspects of spatial design by looking at architecture, furniture, materials and structure. We are asked to communicate our work through model making and 3D visualisation.

Design Work Experience

June 2009 – August 2009:
Job Title: Assistant Designer on the production of ‘Henry IV’ at the Drum Theatre, Plymouth
Job Description: Assisting with the design and painting of the stage; organising and researching props; designing and choosing costumes for the cast. Teaching the children from ‘The Young Design Company’ how to paint and make posters for the production.

July 2009:
Two week work experience at Lacey Hickie Caley Architects, Plymouth
Job Description: Producing a 3D model using Sketch Up of an apartment’s interior on a major redevelopment scheme. Site visit to the apartment to understand finishes and scale.

June 2007 – January 2007:
Job Title: Freelance Interior Designer for David Burley Architects
Job Description: Producing 3D models using Sketchup and photomontages of models in context. I also assisted on a measured and topographical site survey.

June 2007 – September 2007:
Job Title: Freelance Interior Designer for Present to Sell
Job Description: Producing CAD drawings from measured surveys; researching furniture and accessories to decorate the interiors of show houses; making mood boards and furniture layouts for the rooms; assisting in the decoration of a flat interior.
