PERSONAL STATEMENT – SAM MORRIS

Fairytales, myths and legends have been my main inspiration within my work as they have long been a fascination for me. 

I am especially interested in the darker side and humour of the tales that sometimes we only see as adults.

It interests me how as children we collect toys and have our favourite stories, then as we grow we get rid of them thinking them childish. Later, we may find ourselves drawn again to toys or images that have a slight edge to them and trigger a memory of a forgotten story. 

Greek mythology characters were the inspiration for my final major project and I wanted to update them in a contemporary and fun way.

I use both screen-printing and digital textile printing for my designs and make them into cushions and toys and more recently silk scarves and greeting cards. 

I like to create pieces that have a sense of humour but with added darkness, something that is appealing but also a bit gruesome too, in a comical way.
