I am a recent design graduate from Loughborough University.
My current collection of printed textile furnishings has grown from my final degree project entitled ‘Imagination.’
The collection is initially hand drawn and then developed through computer aided design and although originally trained as a screen printer, I now predominantly digitally print fabrics in order to achieve the bright colours and detailed elements of the designs.
I have always loved interiors, their longevity, the ideal of making a house a home, an environments ability to shape moods and form the basis of memories.
For these reasons it was only natural that I would design textiles for interiors; I just want to do what I love.
The strange mix of eclectic imagery used in the prints is inspired by everything around me, and if I like it, I use it.
The collection is meant to be fun and has no serious undertones. Often a trip to the park or Portabello market is more than enough to inspire me for months.
When I first begun this collection the colours and imagery were far more muted, but after a very poorly 6 weeks in hospital I decided that colour and fun were defiantly required! And when I returned to work that’s exactly what happened.
Although these designs undoubtedly appeal to children engaging them with exciting imagery and bright colour, they aim to appeal to the child within the adult - taking them on a journey through their imagination without conflicting their mature tastes.
In many ways the environment surrounding these designs will effect how they are perceived.
Personally I visualize these designs sitting beautifully in a simple (but homely and lived in) white room, adding statement colour and exciting imagery to the space.
It’s artwork that doesn’t have to be framed and hung on walls, you can touch, play, sit and nestle into these functional pieces, and ultimately that’s what I love.
I’m an enthusiastic hard worker, I make the most of every opportunity and find inspiration for design projects wherever I am.
Most recently I have been setting up SjGuest Designs a small collection of printed textile furnishings.
I also am just completing my PGCE year (teacher training) and run regular printed textile workshops for gifted and talented children in Havering.
