The Estonian Academy of Arts celebrated the 40th anniversary of its EKRI fashion show, an annual event that champions young fashion designers.

A total of 16 designers participated in this year’s event, showcasing 14 fashion collections. During the show, one collection was selected to be rewarded with a prize of 1,200 Euros, and this year the top prize was presented to Eneken Johanson for her collection ‘Who Let the Dust Out?’.

Johanson’s collection is based on the experience of moving into a new home and renovating and decorating, particularly the act of covering everything in plastic sheets to protect furniture, flooring and objects from dust.

When her own renovations were complete, Johanson was faced with a large amount of waste material, which she wanted to incorporate into her own fashion collection. One material in particular inspired her design process: electrical wires.

Johanson writes: ‘I crocheted, knitted with hands, braided, bent and did so many different things [with the wires], until I found a technique that carries my whole protection-wear collection, that will give you a touch of childishness with practicality and most importantly- lets me use up some waste.’

The electrical wires were then woven into pieces in the collection, creating structure in the seams, producing rippling silhouettes and moulded flowers that protrude out of the textiles.

Other winners in the EKRI Fashion Show 2022 were Mairo Seire who was given the second place prize for the collection ‘Põrmandurõõva’,  and Siim Oja who came third place with the collection ‘Define: chimera, cute, eerie’. Special prizes were presented to Anastasia Pyakakova and Ron-Jonas and the Sustainable Fashion Week Vilnius special award was given to both Mairo Seire and Eneken Johanson as well as Joanne-Heleene Sõrmus won.

Fashion videos were also celebrated at the show with Ron-Jonas Verlin, Eneken Johanson, Siim Oja and Mairo Seire winning the EKA special video production award.

Winning designers were selected by a jury of judges made up of ARTS THREAD’s Katie Dominy, Tanel Veenre, Liis Eesmaa, Kristi Pärn Valdoja, Rolands Peterkops, Marite Mastina Peterkopa, Annamari Vänska, Johanna Maria Parv, Kristel Sooaru, TITA and Signe Kivi.
