The Kunstgewerbemuseum presented a bumper edition of the German Design Graduates (GDG) show, featuring the work of 2020 and 2021 cohorts from 15 of Germany's best design colleges.

The show, which ARTS THREAD is proud to be a media partner for, reflects the current design ethos of Germany's emerging product and industrial designers. Each year, the GDG awards prizes to selected graduates, chosen by a panel of industry leaders.

The Social Design Award was given to  Florian Henschel's MateriaLab (Bauhaus Universität Weimar). MateriaLab is a system of science kits that educate children on the importance of recycling. The system contains four boxes that allow kids to try out different recycling processes using specialised tools and material samples.

Vorkoster by Kimia Amir-Moazami (Universität der Künste Berlin) was awarded the top Design Research prize. The project consists of a lid that aims to address the issue of food waste and inaccurate best before dates. The lid contains a PH-sensitive foil that reacts to spoiling proteins and changes colour, alerting the consumer that they need to eat the food before it's no longer safely edible.

And finally, Mika Siponen (Muthesius Kunsthochschule Kiel) was given the Circular Pioneer Recognition award for the project Das gute Leben. Siponen's project deals with the demand for chipboard material by creating a new fully recyclable and biodegradable panel for use in furniture, interior and exhibition design.
