Katerina Tereza Chytilova Fashion and footwear design students from the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague (UMPRUM) are presenting their Unique Client project at Milan Design Week 2022. Unique Client aims to make fashion design more inclusive of people with diverse abilities. The project was inspired by costume designer Simona Rybáková’s experience with a young man who was unable to find a suit that fit his body due to his disability. Rybáková explains: ‘During the semester-long course, we focused on the physical side of the human body - its physicality, communication, and the psychology of working with a client. The physical aspect of the body as the primary point of the project was explored in various depths and together with well-formulated questions became the basis for the final project - a collection of garments for a specific client. We placed special emphasis on the perception of bodies that have their own physical peculiarities, deformations, or anomalies, either congenital or caused by injury or poor lifestyle, which today’s clothing production (both individual and ready-to-wear) does not usually have in its viewfinder.’ The students worked with individual clients who all had different physical and accessibility requirements, making them functional and fashionable pieces. Tereza Chytilová worked with client Kateřina, who has fused joints, to create a classic Hollywood-inspired piece. Valerie Jurčíková aimed to give her client Vojtěch more confidence and have a better attitude towards his body. Hana Valtová had comfort front of mind while working with client Maruška who is affected by a skin disease that causes their skin to become inflamed and blister due to the rubbing of their clothes. Valtová focused on selecting materials that are gentle on the skin and minimized and inverted seams so there’s less chance of the garment rubbing the wearer. Barbora Kotěšovcová worked with her young client to find a way to integrate her orthopedic corset – which helps children with scoliosis and spinal disabilities – into everyday clothing, making it an aesthetically pleasing part of an outfit. The pieces were then documented in a photoshoot in collaboration with the photography students and Štěpánky Stein and Václav Jirásek. Images celebrating the diversity of the models will be displayed at ALCOVA, Via Simone Saint Bon 1, Milan, Italy. Exhibition runs 5-12 June 2022. Opening hours 11 am – 7 pm. ![]() More Highlights |
