ARTSTHREAD:Where are you currently based? Describe your workspace at home?

Rui Yang: I'm originally from Shanghai but I'm living in Florence to study. My workspace at home is a mess, I don’t have enough energy to clean.

ARTSTHREAD: What is the name, theme, concept and final outcome of your graduate project?

Rui Yang: In today’s time, most young people like to spend time at home and engage with social media, music and culture. But opera is a perfect place to enjoy music, art, and a magnificent atmosphere. My final project is an opera, TURANDOT which I named HUMAN BLOOD STEAMED BUN. It's inspired by a Chinese idiom which means to take advantage of another person's misfortune.

TURANDOT is an opera inspired by the theme of taking advantage of other's misfortunes.

ARTSTHREAD:Can you describe your concept and creative process?

Rui Yang: In China, in the opera of TURANDOT, is the love between TURANDOT and Calaf is really admirable? Do we praise that? The greatest princess use a human head full of blood to lay the foundations of her future love, like a gravestone in the cemetery, to cover up all the souls. In that, she is reborn -the psycho love.

ARTSTHREAD: Can you explain the thinking behind the key concepts and outcomes of your project?

Rui Yang: When I selected this project, I firstly figured out what I want to do. Because if you read the story again and again, you’ll find it’s really bloody. So what I want to do is make it easier to understand and also interesting, to break the tradition as well.

Rui's primary goal with the project was to interest more young people in the world of opera.

ARTSTHREAD: How has online learning changed your outcomes?

Rui Yang: I feel free, I could spend more time focusing on my project.

ARTSTHREAD: Have you had to innovate when working by yourself at home?

Rui Yang: NOPE, I've always liked working at home, so there is no difference.

Rui Yang Rui's goal was to make the project understandable in a short amount of time

ARTSTHREAD: What's one thing that has helped you get through the last year?

Rui Yang: COFFEE

ARTSTHREAD:What are the most positive learning outcomes from this process?

Rui Yang: To make the project understandable in a short amount of time.

ARTSTHREAD: How do you think design can help improve the world?

Rui Yang: Oh, it can change it a lot, we would not be able to live in a world without design. The potential of the human brain is powerful.

ARTSTHREAD: What are your hopes for the future?

Rui Yang: I aspire to become a famous artist.

ARTSTHREAD: Thank you Rui - we wish you all the very best
