About:

The grid is a fundamental concept in textile design, a connection between different design structures and even a tool for building a design concept. In this project I create structures that combine fabrics with concrete tiles, in the ‘grid’ context. The connection of the building and textile worlds, concrete tiles and fabric straps, allows me to examine relationships between materials and their different traits. The most basic weaving structure is ‘plain weave’, intersecting wrap threads and weft threads . In construction of buildings, the first stage is casting the base – floor, which is created from two layers of concrete castings with an iron net between them, the net allows the concrete to attach to it, crating reinforced concrete. The iron net is set up in a grid structure, enabling the concrete to withstand pulling forces. This shows the grid as a common ground for weaving and building with concrete. By being present on both structures, the grid constitutes the base of the inter-combined fabrics. In the project design I focus on the encounter between fabrics and concrete tiles. I created a series of large fabrics, displaying different concrete to textile ratios. I weave length and width straps and cast a concrete tile, which is the connection link where they meet. At the same time the fabric acts as a base for the concrete hardening and strengthening. The design of fabric to tile ratio, creates in each outcome, a different movement, and context to space.
