The current Fashion industry is over saturated with models who emote a similar look and personality. Magazines process the same kind of person in every page. The lack of diversity is noticeable. While its improving there are still stigmas when it comes to age. The industry is supposedly about role models and personality, but how can we aspire to be someone we have no common threads with? My role model is Dolly Chandler and her eclectic collection of scarves. A treasure-trove of colour that I dressed up in as a child. Dolly is my Nan and I wanted her to be a ‘queen for a day’. The development and thought process of my designs manifested into a combination of regal and 1940s/50s details, proportions and shapes being applied to the contemporary, through contrasting fabrics. Dolly’s scarves and personality provided the inspiration for the colour pallet. It’s been a joy to use my design to reconnect with my nan, who is currently battling dementia, by revisiting her memories through her clothes and accessories. Reconnecting with what had been forgotten and applying it to the modern, allowing her personality to shine through. A big thank you to my nans sister-in-law Jean, for modelling, allowing me to tap into the vitality through her like-minded thinking. For me diversity is about expression, it’s about everyone being unique. I think it’s important to take inspiration from the role models surrounding you, be personal, be out there, be expressive.
