As a fashion design student I start a collection by thinking about the type of person I’m designing for. The illustrations in this submission are garment development drawings inspired by plus-sized models such as Diana Veras who use Instagram as a platform for body positivity and to discuss issues including feminism and race. The woman’s march on Washington in January led to my interest in strong, outspoken women. I tried to reflect this type of woman in my illustrations, using a realistic and representative style in pencil. I kept a sense of simplicity to the drawings as I wanted to be truthful in the way I portrayed my subject, particularly in terms of representing a larger body size than normally seen in the fashion industry. The styling and attitude of the women in my illustrations was inspired by Princess Nokia, a female rapper from New York. She is confident and comfortable with herself, and has an effortlessly unique style. The figures in my illustrations are drawn in confident stances. The splashes of bright colour add to the bold and expressive sentiment in the illustration. Through my drawings I envision a world in which all women consider themselves beautiful as they are and are resistant to unrealistic beauty standards which can cause so much pain and insecurity.
