Chinese Han is the world’s largest ethnic group but China is made up of 55 other cultures and faiths which are not fully understood, even by those in my own nation My hometown Xinjiang province is full of different national minorities. When I studied in another province friends asked me the lifestyle in Xingjiang. They thought that minorities still lived a primitive life - having never touched electronic devices. Firstly this misunderstanding shocked me, and I was shamed to tell them where my hometown is. Then I realized that I should use design to break the wall between different ethnic groups. Minorities are integrated into the contemporary society, they just keep their traditional customs. My friend Yang Ru is my muse. She is a 20-year-old fashion design student whose ethnic origin is Hui, she is Muslim and skater. Her love of skateboarding and street culture inspired me to integrate this with details relating to her national culture. The designs are made up of printed fabric, sportswear features and functionality with national accessories. I intend for my designs to show the truth of minorities and hope my work can help people to gain a new understanding of minorities, to give minorities confidence to show their diversity.
