The purpose of my work is to invite people to connect with the Earth, and our environment and take a moment to consider our relationship with the planet and time. Many of my paintings are produced by simulating the natural processes of corrosion, sedimentation and evaporation as layers of pigment, ink, wax and paint are added and removed and allowed to dry at various speeds. What at first appears an abstract image created by recording the textured surface of York Stone might become a seabed as in 'Sea- Stone', or the broken surface of a small section of the studio floor a vast imaginary continent as in, ‘Blue Earth’. These paintings began in a similar way to a ‘takuhon' print, (the ancient Chinese method of printing surfaces by dabbing ink onto paper which is laid over a textured surface). An area of cracked studio floor is my continent. I built up the image with many layers of etching ink and pastels, using a rubbing motion similar to ‘frottage’. My physical engagement created indexical marks which react to marks recorded of the surface beneath as they become visible reminiscent of the etching process.
