About:

My work investigates the human body’s experience of water, the experience of immersion the dissolution of the body in water. Investigating where human beings stand in relation to nature and the cosmos and our relationship with surroundings.Bodies descending into water and floating with no obvious power of movement or resistance remind me of the mind, birth, baptism, ritual cleansing, death, re-creation and rebirth. Each of these ritualistic acts take place in both the body and the mind, water symbolizes the whole of potentiality, the decent into water is the operation of mythic metamorphosis the manner by which the body is turned into a medium for spiritual experience. An encounter with the sea and water is an encounter with the unknown and its unfathomable depths. Water, and its mysterious, inaccessible depths can be used represent the frustration of human inquiry.A place somewhere different to our earthly habitation, a liminal experience.Water as a substance becomes memory, it grabs and eats a trace from all that it has skimmed, bathed or rolled across. It carries away bits of atoms, elements of energy and bubbles of subterranean gases. The tendency of things to become diluted with the passage of time make memory like water, a formless element that permeates everything. It is the point of origin for all of life on the planet, as primal cells emerged in primitive seas.

VESTIGE: Aluminium and Dye 100cm x 100cm composite of 4 The evaporation of dye in water leaves a remainder of organic like fractals and coloured residues. Each piece a vestige of the unseen elements and the universal laws of physics and nature which lie outside the frame, thus opening up an approach to infinity. The manifestation of the disappearance of that which has been and gone. Each piece singular and different to the piece before, yet placed together in plurality. My work is an investigation of water; water grabs and eats a trace from all that it has skimmed, bathed or rolled across. It carries away bits of atoms, elements of energy and bubbles of subterranean gases becoming a substance of memory. The tendency of things to become diluted with the passage of time make memory like water, a formless element that permeates everything. It is the point of origin for all of life on the planet, as primal cells emerged in primitive seas.
