'Best Before' To disregard the marginalised, is to circumcise society of its potential. Specifically I am examining the marginalisation of older women within media, fashion branding and modelling. It is widely acknowledged that within these fields women have an 'expiration date’. Until the very foundations of current identity creation are readdressed, we continue to live within a system that fails to recognise the value of difference. We need to see beyond external superficial qualities and categorisations, as they reveal nothing of a persons character or their potential to contribute positively to society, people’s worth should be measured independent of oppressive stereotypes and hierarchies, to allow greater self expression and social acceptance. The women in my image have been painted white to ‘standardise’ them, likening them to mannequins, a replaceable commodity devoid of any personal identity. The words painted on their lips are a societal projection, during the shoot these words were a physical restriction, preventing the women from speaking and rendering them voiceless. I believe the stereotype of the ‘feminine’ ideal needs to be challenged. DIVERSITY_NOW_2016
