Final Collection Lucy Saunders This collection is based around repurposing and upcycling old sails! As a designer, I find that it is more important than ever to contribute to the fashion industry’s path of change through creative reuse. Not only are the sails of sailing boats aesthetically appealing to me, but they also have limited life span leaving many, worn, damaged and unwanted. I consequently channelled all my energy to give new life to an otherwise wasted material. They were an exciting, attractive and innovative material to use, creating a contrast between the old and new. This collection is comfortable to wear and impresses the viewer through intricate details, dramatic silhouette, curves and colours. The development of my collection begins with primary research such as photography, styling, and sketching which lends insights to colour and print, whilst drape and collage help with proportion and silhouette. Overall, the signature of the collection is characterised by bold colour, print, graphics, and texture and fit readily into the commercial sector as well as on the runway. It is encompassed by these details and different design whilst also being combined with high-tech fabric, making this collection a luxury leisurewear and sportswear assortment suitable for all.

Lucy’s Redress Design Award collection, ‘Upcycle, Renew, Remake’, brings new life to items from her childhood to form a utility-inspired unisex collection. Upcycling a range of materials given by her friends or found in her home, including tents, old sailing flags and scout flags, along with secondhand garments, Lucy utilises unique elements on the fabrics such as eyelets and rope to allow the user flexibility in how each piece is worn. “Sustainable design is exciting and allows me to be creative whilst keeping true to my values. It's about the combination of the old and new, being authentic and looking to the future.” - Lucy Saunders
