My Graduate Collection has stemmed from my lifelong fascination with other cultures. “Egungun” explores the celebration of Voodoo in its spiritual birthplace, Africa. My collection was influenced by the energetic atmosphere during an annual Voodoo festival in West Africa. Vibrant and colourful costumes with dancing and chanting to drumbeats inspired the story behind my work. The six pieces portray the stages of a ritual dance where a Voodoo practitioner becomes “possessed” by a God, from intense energetic dancing to a crazed state and finally complete exhaustion. Aged anthropomorphic sculptures which were used in ancient Voodoo rituals are what inspired the unusual silhouettes and cut of the clothes. The West African figures made of wood, textile, bone and string are also represented though the many textures that run through the six looks, such as, wooden neck pieces and panels, weaving and knotting.

Enya Fortuna, is a visual artist based in Cork, Ireland. I designed and produced a garment specifically for the artist's performance piece 'When White Egrets Spawn'.

A personal response to the taboo surrounding the number '13' and how the 'unlucky' superstitions are a positive to me.
