The piece reimagines what 'modernity' would look like under these circumstances. Mutant by Dae Uk Kim is a reflection of the designer's feelings of being 'othered' as a gay male in South Korea. Dae Uk Kim sees similarities between himself and fictional mutants and has created a series of objects that have been mutated into grandiose and unusual shapes with the aim of 'encouraging people to consider the implicit boundaries around gender that exist in different cultures and societies around the world.' Flora Lechner's project, Shape Shifter, looks at society's obsession with the 'ideal' body. With the project, Lechner seeks the answer as to whether exercise can be made creative. Lechner writes: 'The ‘Shape Shifter’ machine holds the body in a loop of repetitive prewritten movements. Engaging with it initiates a cycle of relational dynamics, merging human and machine into one entity. Working out stops being a spectacle of the body and becomes a spectacle of the action.'  Niall KevilleNiall Keville seeks to make household objects more visible in our day to day lives by imagining a world where these items are sentient 'questioning our intentions as we define them in relation to our needs or desires.' Célestine Peuchot wonders what the world would be like if all our systems and machines stopped working . Peuchot has produced a series of objects that essentially work as elements in a fictional manufacturing chain that is suddenly no longer operating. The project, titled Inert Domestic System, 'demonstrates that artisanal and industrial manufacturing are less at odds with each other than is commonly perceived, disrupting preconceptions about how things are made and used.' As Dutch Design Week opens, we look at Design Academy Eindhoven's digital 2020 degree show online showcase, featuring the work of this year's graduating MA and BA students from across the school's departments. In this post we take a look at some of the projects from the MA Contextual Design class of 2020.
Tadeáš Podracký's The Metamorphosis collection of furniture seeks to address our relationship with our environemnts which are increasingly become mass produced and artificial. Podracký explains: "Through the questioning construction methods, putting the emphasis on the authenticity and revaluing material`s ability to reveal characters, I propose a new methodology of making - a reformulated approach to design that is based on emotional decisions, unpredictability and expression. Ultimately, The Metamorphosis collection seeks to enhance the emotional bond to our surrounding environment."
