During Milan Design Week 2019, furniture design students from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) presented the results of their collaboration with Botswana-based furniture and accessories brand Mabeo.
A total of 13 students from RISD took part in the exhibition at Ventura Future which explored the notions of cultural identity in art and design.
Pieces on display in the RISDxMabeo exhibition included Amalia Attias’ metal Marked Chair which draws inspiration from contemporary African art and decorated by hand with paint and Letraset.
Asher Gillman’s Reach Shelf was influenced by the construction methods used in Dogon mosque, a clay building propped up with branches.
Tim Miller showed his table made from panga panga wood which takes its shape from patterns found in African textiles and ceramic art. Tiarra Bell’s Purity Mirror was made using the same traditional techniques used in the Mabeo factory including hand carving and coopering. The shape of the mirror aims to appear like a portal to a strange and unexpected place.
