About

Furniture & product designer. Beckmans College of Design graduate 2023.

Irma is a creator table, designed through emotional design. Emotional design means that characteristics, memories and nostalgia can sometimes mean more than functionality, when it comes to the longevity of a product. Curious about how I could implement emotional design in my design process, I asked myself if I could transfer the feelings I got from my family's old sewing box into a new object. Stability, warmth and creative joy were my leading words during the entire process. Four chunky, stable and “oversized” legs came to mind and the idea of a table for crafting started to take place. I added two adjustable shelves that you can lift to reveal the storage box in the middle, for a clear recognizability to the sewing box. The playful hinges are the heart of this furniture and with the round wooden knobs I wanted it to be the first thing that drew the eye's attention. Irma has the measurements similar to a lower coffee table, and is meant to be used in the living room, stored with craft supplies or coffee table books, that’s up to you. The table is made out of cross-laminated fir with a white lacquered stain. All the legs and shelves are hollow, as they are all connected through miter joints, as a decision to save up on material but still have the overall chunky feeling to it. Designed and handcrafted by me.
