About
Since a few years back, I live in a small remote village located in the north of Sweden, surrounded by forest. The pulp factory is located a couple of miles away, where many people in the area work, and the landscape is significantly embossed by both the historical and current forest industry. When I reflect about my work in relation to the place, it feels like it goes hand in hand. The mountains are increasingly characterised by the bald spots that grow wider. The fishing places on the mire are nowadays wide open fields and on the way to the city the piles of lumber rises from the mill. At home, the kitchen becomes warm from the fire in the stove. My name is Emil Faisal Hasselberg, I'm 26 years old and from a small village called Undrom, located in northen sweden. During the spring, I graduated from the BFA program at HDK-Valand, Campus Steneby- Metal Art, and I will now continue with the MFA at Umeå Art Academy. In my artistiry, I strive to combine craft with contemporary questions regarding the countryside, forest and forestry with a tone of poeticness.
A swing in a polarised landscape
My project is based on reflecting our contemporary relation to the forest and forestry. A swing, consisting of a log replicated in metal, embodies the play of childhood, timber tongs depicts the small scale to the big scale forest industries, but also the development from a forestry by hand towards today's forest machines. The bark grey, the wood, the internal coloured in gold. I want to discuss and investigate questions such as; Where is the balance between the use of nature as an industrial resource? What does forests mean to us as individuals, and as a collective? With a tone of poeticness, I want to create an installation that functions as a space for reflection and a platform for discussion and understanding within a polarised question.
