Hi, I'm Nika! I'm an illustrator with a passion for storytelling, and a lover of general "whimsy". Some other notable themes in my work include community, fashion, fairytales, diversity/heritage, and childhood. I'm a major extrovert so I love working in a team, communicating, and getting to know new people, as well as new languages/cultures! My only wish is to continue living my life making art that brings joy to other people :) hope you enjoy your visit into my world!
A tale of five suits tells the story of an original high fantasy world based on the forgotten ethnodiversity of Medieval times and the lore behind playing cards and tarot, through a deck of dual-play (playable as both classic and tarot) cards. The history of playing cards is a culmination of so many different cultures, which is not well remembered in modern times. My cards showcased clothes and cultures of the Ottoman Turks, Tang Dynasty China, the Mamluk empire, Moorish Spain, Chandra and Deva era Bengal, and Rococo France, chosen due to their distinct connections to playing card history. In my fictional world, each suit is a distinct kingdom with their own forms of magic and government. For my first drawings, I decided to depict the Queen and King of each respective kingdom, as well as the Joker cards from a different kingdom, in the form of the Major Arcana of the traditional Tarot lore. I hope to accomplish completing at least 8 other additional Tarot cards of the Major Arcana, digging deeper into the historic contexts, and having that reflect through my character design and technical artist, but eventually my goal is to have a whole deck, as well as a cohesive story that fits the Hero's Journey.
