Algae as a Biomaterial is a project which explores the potential of algae, an abundant marine organism, as a sustainable alternative to plastic materials. Through extensive testing and material research, I have made and refined an algae-based yarn which is biodegradable and non-toxic, making it a suitable substitute for single-use packaging. My collection features a knitted bio yarn bag, made to safely break down after use. I have also explored this yarn as a decorative element: creating ropes and sleeve cuffs inspired by nautical elements, along with the organic colours and textures found on the beach. In my seaside hometown, I have witnessed masses of single-use plastic packaging littering the beaches, which is harmful to wildlife because it never fully degrades. Although sustainable packaging is slowly emerging as an alternative to plastic, change needs to happen faster. Algae is fast growing and readily available. It can be mass cultivated without a negative environmental impact. It produces at least 50% of the earth’s oxygen. Why not also make it a usable material?
