About

My name is Hagar Bar-Lev, I'm an Israeli designer and artist, based in Tel-Aviv.The connection to nature had always been a significant part of my life, the simple and natural materials, their characteristics, and the simple manipulations that can be done with them create a fascinating world. The ancient crafts that are a result of the natural characteristics of the materials are the basis for my creative process and what connects me to nature and to the natural rhythm of life. The crafts and the process of creation itself is a tool to acquire skills and knowledge, and is the basis to creating a society, culture and collective consciousness. The connection and compression between social-cultural structures to structures of materials and crafts is something that fascinates me.I disrupt existing crafts and traditional methods of crafting, and combine between ancient crafts to modern ones to acquire qualities and characteristics that empower the labor of hand crafting.

In ancient times, jugs had a practical survival driven containment function and thus were a basic part of human development. The ancient craft of creating jugs relied on materials that are found in nature and followed a circular principle which maximized the jugs' volumes. Over the years, the method of creating jugs had changed into a faster paced craft, just like the fast paced culture. The function of the jug changed from survival driven to emotionally driven, and the jug turned into an object that transcended its practical function, embodying sentimental values of belonging. In this project, I explore the jug as a symbol of an ancient collective memory, and the gradual change in its function, where jugs gradually detach from their practical containment function - using natural materials and ancient crafts, along with newer materials and fast-paced craftsmanship embody the new ancient. Materials: Banana fibers, clay, copper, paper, embroidery thread, PLA. Techniques: Extract natural fibers, manual spinning, hand weaving over mold, pottery, hydraulic pressing, hand sewing, 3D printing.
