"For at least the first 24 to72 hours after an earthquake, everyone will be required to do their best, and the community will have to organize and act on its own behalf..." (Preparing for an earthquake, Israel National Emergency Portal). Canary is a local earthquake response system, which supplements the existing national system in Israel. With Canary, an emergency neighborhood team will assist citizens in the initial rescue efforts. Each team member will have an emergency bag with logistics, protective, and rescue equipment that can be used also by the local population. The team will assist in the rescue efforts while providing the necessary tools, guidance, and instructions to the community. The idea for the project came from my personal experience as a rescuer in the search and rescue Brigade, and from awareness and concern for Israel's preparedness for an earthquake. With countries and residents from all over the world affected by earthquake events, my intention is to adapt Canary to the needs of the different communities and so give people more tools and knowledge to deal with a disaster.
