About
Innes Gourlay-Noor is an award winning textile designer who looks to create lasting, meaningful designs that convey stories and heritage through the lens of hand screen printed and digitally printed textiles. A main point of inspiration for her is her heritage, Being both Scottish and Malaysian, the cultural textiles and the rich industries of hand craft are a constant source of inspiration. Due to fast paced manufacturing, it is important to celebrate and continue to participate in cultural crafts so they don't die out.Through her textiles Innes wants to create an homage to her ethnicity and cultural heritage, whilst innovating designs to bring them into a modern light. Innes is always designing for the future and with purpose, she is conscious of the environment at every step of the design process.By not only taking inspiration from heritage textiles, Innes creates textiles that are meant to last and be used again and again in a diversity of fashion or interior contexts.
create something that lasts
Create Something That Lasts encapsulates three collections of textiles. Episode one is inspired by the cityscape of Edinburgh, Scotland and its Georgian architecture, Episode two is inspired by the food and night markets of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Episode three is where east meets west, where the two parts of Innes collide, through the use of plisse, taken from Scottish cultural dress, the kilt, and screen printing on top of the pleats to overlay motifs and patterns to create the mixed collection. Through the medium of textiles, Innes looks to start a conversation around the merging of cultures, where east meets west and where they contrast and complement each other. Growing up in Scotland Innes struggled to find other mixed children that had the same experience growing up in a mainly white country. Through her work she intends to share her story and experience, as well as let anyone that feels like they don’t belong, know that they are not alone. She wants to celebrate where and who she has come from and all the richness and vibrancy within those cultures and cultural crafts. As well as create a homage to her ethnicity and cultural identity, and create something that lasts.
