Yilin Lyu pursued a master's program in Advanced Product Design at Umeå Institute of Design in Sweden, where she was able to define her long-term goals as a designer. Her aim is to create innovative solutions and experiences that people can use, learn from, play with, and feel through.
DIGITALIZATION OF SMALL-SCALE AGRICULTURE
This thesis project explores challenges faced by small-scale farmers and proposes solutions to adapt to new technologies while maintaining traditional farming practices. The author conducted 20 days of field research in a rural area of China and found that small-scale farmers use the lunar calendar to farm, which works well for good harvests. However, unpredictable weather due to climate change affects crop yields, leading to a significant decrease in income for small farms. The thesis project offers a solution with a shared weather station, farmer-owned soil sensors, and a user-friendly app to access real-time weather and crop data for better crop management and yield forecasting.
