About
I Photograph the places I know best, places I consider closest to home, or communities in wich I find comfort. By focussing on personal stories from my familt, often relating to my Javanese-Surinamese heritage, I try to explore the changing geographies of migration and resettlement. I examine how these Histories can be found in the small details of our daily life.
Fowru explores personal stories from my parents and grandparents to connect with my Javanese-Surinamese background. Central to it is the migration story of my grandfather, Boenasir Johnny Kartomoehamat, who came from Suriname to the Netherlands in search of a better life. His art and passion for songbirds played a major role in this. The photo series within my graduation publication brings together family portraits, artworks, and archival material, telling a layered story of migration, dedication, and cultural heritage, both tangible and intangible. Here we see a selection of selfmade images from the publication.
