A biomaterial solution to help reduce plastic pollution in the ocean Plastic waste in the oceans, especially from the fishing industry, is a major environmental threat. Ropes and lobster traps made of plastic often wear down, becoming microplastic pollution, entangling marine life, and creating ghost gear. At the same time, the European wine industry produces around 5 million tons of grape residues each year, much of which remains unused. Research shows that these byproducts can even support gut health in fish and shrimp, opening new opportunities for sustainable applications in marine environments. From Wine to Gear transforms grape residues into biodegradable fishing equipment designed for both commercial and private use. By replacing plastic ropes and traps with new bio-materials, the project helps to reduce marine pollution and offers a responsible, future-oriented perspective to the fishing industry . With hydrodynamic design optimized for stability and low resistance in water, grape-based composites can be shaped through methods such as 3D printing and heat pressing.
