About
Yalan Dan is a furniture designer who focus on the sustainable design and recycling system. Inspired by “stooping culture”, she experimented with the repair and redesign of broken objects collected from the streets using bioplastics (Polylactic Acid). She chose to combine traditional materials with modern technology to create upcycling furniture.
The Furniture First Aid Kit (F.F.A.) is a modular, 3D-printed set of joints designed to help people quickly assemble or restore wooden furniture or create new items using waste materials. Engaging with the emerging global cultures of repair and restore Dan intends to support and energize peoples ability to fix things themselves in their homes and workplaces. F.F is a bridge to connect waste furniture or materials with a more sustainable lifestyle. Inspired by ‘skip diving’ and “stooping cultures and the tradition of butterfly key joints, Dan experimented with the repair and redesign of neglected waste materials settling on digitally printable bioplastics (Polylactic Acid) as the final solution. I chose to combine waste materials with modern technology to create a new furniture system to make sure that every piece of furniture is a resource that cannot be ignored.
