London Represents inspired me to challenge the fashion industry and question; are all humans loved by fashion? My collection acts as a voice for the often forgotten disabled community; raising awareness of ableism (discrimination against disabled people), whilst also highlighting the importance of diversity and inclusivity in the fashion industry. By comparing each area of the functional, expressive and aesthetic (FEA) consumer needs model to the minimal amount of adaptive clothing that already exists, it became clear that the majority focuses more on functionality (putting the garments on and off) and lacks the opportunity for self-expression. To add to this, high-street clothing shops are not designed specifically for disabled people, nor are the clothes adaptable, therefore adaptive clothing has to be made-to-order from specialists, often with high price tags. “Humans Loved by Fashion” is an adaptive collection for people who have physical disabilities, primarily wheelchair users. The collection incorporates alternative fastenings, comfortable fabrics, and is considerate of how each garment is sewn together in order to make clothes more accessible.
