Fleur Duivenvoorden (2002) is a Dutch illustrator. With her picture book 'I am a Real Knight' she graduated cum laude at the St Joost School of Art and Design in 2023.
Fleur creates colourful and dynamic illustrations that burst with life. Her work is rich in detail and express warmth and comfort. The passion for illustration is palpable in every mark of the coloured pencils she so enjoys using.
As a feminist, Fleur creates a spotlight for women in her work. She stands for equality and diversity, something that is still lacking in modern children's books and illustrations. Her goal is to tell modern stories in a classic form. Picture books are her favored platform to do that.
‘Ik ben een Échte Ridder’ (I Am A Real Knight) tells the story of Jo, a headstrong girl who dreams of becoming a knight. She knows everything there is to know about knights and is already highly skilled. She can fight battles with her sword and ride a horse with confidence. However, to become a real knight, one must defeat a monster. A dangerous beast with massive fangs and claws that must be fought in order to protect the kingdom’s citizens. Therefore, Jo has one thing on her to-do list: finding and defeating a monster. How hard can it be? This book is a love letter to the classic picture book, yet embodies a modern way of thinking.
