The project takes place in the ongoing relocation of Kiruna’s town center. As part of the relocation, the decommissioned mining area Tuolluvaara Gruv AB will play a central role in the new city center. With the aim of preserving the remaining structures of the mining site, the project explores how abandoned industrial buildings can be given new purpose through transformation, and how we can work sustainably with existing buildings instead of demolishing. Through our work, we aim to spark a discussion where industrial heritage, resources, and identity are at the center. The site is given a new role as a place of memory in the new city. A palce for reflection on the challenges and changes in the city’s identity brought about by the relocation. A threshold between landscape and city, between history and the present. A gateway between the new and the existing.
