About
I am inspired by the intensity and strength of natural pigments; it has created a deeper connection between myself and the landscape. Apart from a practical approach in my practice I am drawn to a view which focuses on transience and frailty. I have learnt it is important to remember right in this frailty lies the potential for the seeds of a new life, despite disease. We may consider plants as mindless, but in their admirable if apparently blind striving towards a future there is a model of hope and resilience that I feel we must take despite the increase defeat and despair.Processing organic and inorganic material for the purpose of making my own pigment from the landscape is unbelievably satisfying on a profound and even instinctive level. One of the results of extracting pigment from the landscape by hand is the unavoidable deepening of my knowledge and relationship to the local bioregion where I live.
Working together with the landscape is a way to help remember that we are part of its history and ecology. My research reflects the importance of being mindful and developing respect for and an understanding of our reciprocal relationship with the natural world. Through my work, I hope to inspire others and I hope that they will react to my work with a desire to learn more about the natural world and their place in it.
“In ‘Rendition of Impermanence’, I invite viewers to contemplate the fleeting nature of life and the beauty that arises from embracing it.” My research project, ‘Rendition of Impermanence’, is a deeply personal exploration of grief, connection, and the transient nature of life. Inspired by the memory of my late mother, I embarked on this research project to capture the transience of plants and flowers. By gathering and extracting their pigments, I aim to preserve their fleeting beauty in a tangible form. This process has become a way for me to mourn and accept my mother’s passing, and to find solace and a way to honour the fleeting beauty of the natural world. Each petal and leaf in my herbarium represent a moment in time, a moment of brilliance that will never be repeated. Through this act of preservation, I am reminded of the importance of capturing its essence before it fades away. The final piece shows a series of colour swatches. Small, fleeting moments or impressions with each colour representing a tiny fragment of a larger, transitory whole. A testament to the hues that once graced these living organisms. Over time, the colours you see here will fade or deteriorate, just as flowers eventually wilt and die.
