About
Pattern, shape, texture and colour from the natural world are the main source of inspiration for my work as a woven textile designer. I enjoy looking at how aspects of nature can be brought into interiors through calming colour and interesting woven structures. Introducing the concept that 'nature is not a trend' also allows for longevity and sustainability in my work as it does not focus on a specific season but is instead transitional. Exploring new technical skills is another part of the design process I love, using different warp set ups to develop my ideas and broaden my knowledge of woven textiles. I have recently been awarded the De Montfort University Roadley Award for Supporting Innovation in Sustainability as well as the Worshipful Company of Dyers Award.
The concept of this project is based on a local area of land, formerly an industrial coal mine, Silverwood Colliery in Rotherham, South Yorkshire. This area has been reclaimed, rewilded and redeveloped into a nature reserve where the landscape is now allowed to thrive and flourish. This landscape and new growth will inspire a timeless and seasonless home interior collection that will bring the uplifting feeling the natural world inspires, into every day, homely spaces. Subtle, natural, mood-boosting colours, textures and patterns from grasses, seeds and flowers will promote positive well-being through their links to nature and the outdoors. Introducing the concept that ‘nature is not a trend’ allows for longevity in this project as designs will not be for a specific season but instead will be transitional and reflect the everchanging natural landscape of Silverwood Colliery as it is left to restore and rewild.
