#upcycle #deconstruction #handmade #NuRock Our family home was built around the 1960s and it featured a beautiful garden full of rock decorations made by my grandmother. The garden has a special place in all our hearts because we spent most our time here as a family. However, in 2011 we reconstructed our house and our garden was destroyed.
We greatly regretted this decision, and decided to call some mosaic artists to recreate its essence on our terrace.
This recreation was followed by an interesting upgrade. For instance, the handmade rock hill was reinterpreted as a water fountain and the Chinese orange tree as a gazebo. Our decision to recreate the presence of our rock garden was driven by the regret of demolishing it. It was our way of preserving its memory, reliving its joy, and remedying our mistake.
I found this transformation best reflected in Rabindranath Tagore’s lithographs. Instead of erasing or striking off his errors when he wrote his poems, he turned them to art. This lead me to come up with the concept of upcycling and material explorations made by linking chains. In this project, I have upcycled a military backpack and fur coat collars. I also developed a chainmail pattern in which every unit is hand linked with 39 jump-rings.
