About

Paulina Vasiliauskaitė (b. 2000)  is a designer, who enjoys creating stories and telling them through objects, forms and materials. She is a graduate of the Department of Design at the Vilnius Academy of Arts.2021-2022 she also studied in the Netherlands at Royal academy of Art, The Hague (KABK). Her projects question the separation between art and design. Contexts that she is working with are closely related to Lithuanian traditions, childhood memories and contemporary understanding of femininity.

Swamp for Laumės

Collectible furniture set called “Swamp for Laumės". It consists of a table “above the water” and a lighting fixture “underneath the water”. They were created by investigating Lithuanian mythology, especially mythical creatures called Laumės. Being intermediaries between fate and humans, Laumės in Lithuanian mythology reflect the desire to control one's destiny. It is said that, like other mythical creatures in Lithuania, they live in water (often swamps) where time is passing slowly, whispering that it is the field of the unconscious. Placed within the space these objects give meaning to the present moment, defining place and time. In myths, those factors are crucial for fulfilling a prophesied destiny. To create these objects I experimented with glass making. I used a variety of pigments and techniques to mimic the swamp surface in the glass. For the wooden part I created a small model with my hands, using methods typical of sculpture, aiming to give these objects the opportunity to challenge us like sculpture. When using digital technologies, cnc cutting and unpredictability those models were turned into design objects. Through material research, questioning myths and craft heritage, this project proposes a unique design method, combining traditional crafts with smart industrial manufacturing processes and modern approach to design.
